The Silver Gryphon by Mercedes Lackey, Larry Dixon

4.0

“Caught between glass and wood, that which breaks and that which bends, that which sings and that which survives. So our lives go.”

After I grew so attached to Amberdrake and Skan, I was annoyed to learn that in this book we would be following a whole new set of characters. But what made this work for me was how it offered a unique take on the meaning of legacy. Both Skan and amberdrake are powerful magic users with reputations that their children feel pressured to live up to. Instead of forcing their children to follow in their footsteps, these two parents’ true “legacy “ is letting their children follow their own paths.

I also loved how Blade and Tad had a similar relationship to Skan and Drake. It was cool to see that the bond formed between human and gryphon is something that can carry on through generations.
