The Lady Rogue by Jenn Bennett
2.0

Oh Jenn, I thought this was going to be so much fun! Instead...I stopped 62% of the way through.

Aside from one book, I've generally really enjoyed Bennett's work. I felt like the idea of her doing something more historical, more fantastical was exciting, too, thinking applying the fun, witty banter of her past characters to such a setting would be a match made in heaven.

I do think a lot of my disappointment lies in the misleading title, honestly. I can't say Theodora really felt like a rogue. She wasn't thieving, lying, smooth-talking, sneaky...none of the qualities I'd apply to the idea of a rogue. In fact, Huck was much more rogueish, and he was certainly no lady.

I also just felt like the chemistry between Theodora and Huck was damn near nonexistent, and that's usually something Bennett does not struggle with in the least. Here, however, they may bicker like an old married couple, but it's a couple without passion, chemistry, interest.

There was just as little intrigue or excitement when it came to the plot as well and between that, the milquetoast love story, and a main character who scarcely lives up to the book's title, I just wasn't interested in finishing this one up. Better luck next time, Jenn!
