This book felt like it was just an excuse for the author to express his political/religious views. Every conversation with the main character was packed with facts, so much so that the conversations seemed unrealistic. I mean c'mon, how is it that you meet up with friends every day just to have political/religious debates? It seemed like there was no real relationship between the main character and his acquaintances.
There was one thing that made me doubt the authenticity of this story, and that is the fact that our main character, who is said to "be penniless come every 15th of the month", frequently visits Starbucks. Isn't Starbucks coffee really pricey? And he's staying in Malaysia, where you can get coffee for as low as RM1 (0.24 USD) at local coffee shops. If he's really that broke, how can he afford the luxury of visiting Starbucks so frequently? This has made me wonder if the author has actually experienced life in Malaysia, or if this is just based on his research.
All in all, this was a boring read. The execution was bland and uninteresting.
I was sent an ARC by Asaad Almohammad (thanks!) and this is my honest review.
