Age of Bronze, Vol. 1: A Thousand Ships by Eric Shanower

5.0

In this modern retelling of the Trojan War in comic form, Eric Shanower achieves the impossible. He weaves together all the various, sometimes contradictory, myths into one story. In Shanower's retelling, the gods are present only in the minds of the combatants. In their preparations for war, the Greeks and Trojans constantly worry about oracles, portents, and fate, but you never see the deities swoop from the heavens to take part in the story. Never does Paris sit in judgment of the Goddesses. Instead, Paris tells the story of his dream to Helen in order to seduce her. She runs off with Paris to Troy, convinced that the gods leave her no choice.

Shanower's years of research and work on this book show. His painstaking detail and artwork helps create a world that is at once utterly foreign and completely believable.
