Der zerbrochne Krug by Heinrich von Kleist

Sigh. This is a very enjoyable comedic sketch that I ended up liking a lot when I finally got past my initial reservations in getting into it. Still, I don’t think I can recommend it to anyone but very die-hard German studies majors as it’s … it’s a handful.

Please read it in one sitting and with a commentated edition as it takes a good long while to get accustomed to the peculiar phraseology and archaic vocabulary in it no matter how well you speak German.

Once you get past that hurdle you should have a lot of fun with this little comedy of errors which pokes fun at a corrupt magistrate and his blinkered subjects.
