Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky
4.0

Spiders who hyper-evolved thanks to a man-made virus on a desolate terraformed planet eventually make contact with humans from ruined, destroyed Earth.

This is the kind of book that makes you go 'wow' on hindsight. The writing, though decent, isn't anything to write home about, but the underlying concepts of this whole novel are grand, nuanced, and pretty revolutionary. Why shouldn't spiders and other Children of Earth, have a go at colonising the stars as well? Who are the aliens here?

Started this book with very low expectations, and found myself unexpectedly and slowly drawn in by the magic of the tale.
