The Bangalore Detectives Club by Harini Nagendra
4.0
An entertaining cozy mystery with a clever amateur female detective set in 1920s Bangalore. Newlywed Kaveri is adjusting to the big city and her new husband, desperate to apply her intelligence towards being more than a housewife, when she stumbles across a body at their country club. It's fascinating to read a mystery with mostly Indian characters and that captures the pivotal period in India where resistance to British rule and colonial exploitation was growing. Nagendra fully captures diverse perspectives and different elements of society, with supporting characters including a Muslim cop, dalits, and women forced into prostitution. The mystery was a little obvious, with a clear culprit nearly from the start, but I enjoyed the characters and world-building so much that I didn't mind.
