Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason

4.0

This was a truly excellent book. At first I thought it would be a classic lit fic, but it surprised me. The themes explored go much further with a particular focus on mental illness. This is done through the lens of how it affects the MC's familial and romantic relationships, as well as her own sense of self.

Bullet review:
- Harrowing journey
- Dry wit and humor
- Owning up to one's mistakes
- Slice of life story
- MC in her late 30s
- Commentary on motherhood
- Excellent ending

Personal storytime: The MC goes on many years being undiagnosed/misdiagnosed and that hit so close to home for me. I've struggled with mental illness since I was a toddler, never getting an answer, robbing me of opportunities and feeling inadequate...Until I was finally diagnosed as being autistic at age 29. Suddenly everything made sense! This changed my life. Putting words on a feeling is so important and I think this book really conveys that message.
TW: Mental illness, miscarriage, suicidal intent...Feel free to DM me for specifics.
