Spoiler Alert
by Olivia Dade
Firstly, we love to see a STEM heroine. April is a geologist, she seems to work in consulting doing testing on contaminated sites for remediation. She also writes fanfic. I just love Olivia Dade's characters, especially her heroines, self-actualized fat women over the age of 30 who are pursuing their own interests in life. Just having a window into the confidence and depth of these characters is somehow... reassuring? I don't know. Why is it so revolutionary to want to exist in the world, unashamed? I don't know, but it is. And they aren't overconfident or brash, they get hurt and make mistakes and hurt other people. It just feels very healing to read.
Her relationship with Marcus is very sweet. I got impatient with some of the communication errors they were having about 65% of the way in, just bracing myself for the inevitable, but I'm glad I powered through. I also loved that these characters are 36 and 40 years old and they are STILL struggling with their parents. SO REAL. I'm very interested to see how the next book goes, Alex is like human fireworks!
