I liked this story way more than I thought I was going to. But let's be honest. Death magic? Necromancy? Of course I was going to like it!
Court & political intrigue, a love triangle, and religious/cultist tones involving prophecies, all encircled within a classic fantasy world with elements of darkness, made this an interesting and fun read.
It's a good cast of characters, too. Well-rounded personalities and agendas, they made a good set of individuals. Lore is a great protagonist, and as more characters were introduced, their interactions had a good flow that made for easy reading.
The magic system is interesting, in a good way, and made for some really cool mental visuals.
The story itself is pretty slow, but once you get into it and the story gets rolling, it becomes easy to lose yourself within the pages.
What makes this just miss the mark for me, is that at times I found myself a little confused (I got lost during that ending), but these are far and few between so it doesn't ruin the story, and I wish there was more romance! I thought there would be, and it was a little disappointing but fine.
I can sort of see where the story will be heading, but I've honestly no idea what's going to happen next, and this excites me for the sequel!
