A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman

4.0

I'm not really so sure I would classify this as horror. I will admit that I found some parts of this fairly creepy, but those parts were few and far between. Also, that 'creep' really has more to do with my own submechanophobia than anything else.

This was a really enjoyable novella, and I found it to be unique and interesting. I would just say that, at least for me, this wasn't exactly a story that I would categorize as 'horror'. I chose to read it on Halloween specifically because I expected it to be really scary and I wanted to be unnerved. I felt a little let down on the fear factor, but very much enjoyed the atmosphere and strangeness of the story.

The ending was a bit vague and open-ended. Part of me would like to know more, but the author left it off as he did by design and I appreciate the ambiguity of the conclusion.

Overall, I liked it quite a bit, I just didn't find it very scary.
