This gets put in memoir > historical fiction given that the man convicted of the crime was falsely accused. The author has come out to apologize, but a man lost 40 years of his life if you include the fact that he needed to be on a registry. The attack may be real, but it is clear that there are aspects of the re-telling in this book that are not.
When I first read this book, I was a teen and was drawn to the story, but knowing the ripple effect has created a different impact. I know prints of this book were stopped, but I hope any newer prints come with a disclaimer. Or, she writes something like "Not so Lucky" where it blends the two stories: convicted of a crime and the victim sells a bestselling book that will eventually garner enough attention for a movie, which leads to questions and the falsely accused to be released.
