This is one where I can imagine my opinion changing quite a bit as I sit on it. The first half was, admittedly, quite slow. Unfortunately, this mainly was caused by the start of Alice's story not being that... well... interesting. Schwab's choice to litter her narrative with flashbacks became a little bit tedious at times, and I don't think the pay off at the end was worth it. Having said that, everything about Maria, Sabine and Charlotte I absolutely loved. Those sections I devoured, the language was lush and the vibes were immaculate. I don't know if it was the character of Alice I just did not gel with or the way she was written, but she just didn't work for me until the very, very end. I am currently sitting on a 4 star because I think it had all the makings of a 5 star book, but the issues I had with these sections of the book did hold back my rating at points, which is a real shame. It definitely makes me excited to read more of V. E. Schwab's writing soon though, as I think she is clearly a great writer who can create a great moody, immersive atmosphere. For now, 4 stars.
