Minding Frankie by Maeve Binchy

3.0

A quick, charming read full of lots of character portraits, surprisingly full-bodied considering how fast we move from one person to another. I enjoyed several of Maeve Binchy's books when I was in high school and when I heard she had died, I picked this up, feeling nostalgic. There were few surprises here, but it was a pleasure to spend time in a place where the world has lots of harsh edges, but people come together to make each others' lives better.

(Aside - it seems like whenever I read contemporary fiction set in Ireland, there's a pregnant woman smoking and nobody around her seems at all disturbed. It puzzles me every time.)
