Picked this one up at a nearby Half Price Books. First thing to note is that the hardcover is printed with the same design as the dust jacket, which I thought was nice for a coffee table book.
I've been collecting zoo experiences over the last five years, and this book hits me right in the feels. I applaud the photographer, Joel Sartore for creating this photo ark to document the existence of all these species, from common animals to ones that are extinct in the wild.  Each animal gets a full page, with some exceptions, like rows of butterflies or tadpoles.
The photographs are fantastic.  The  book is divided into themes: Mirrors, Partners, Opposites, Curiosities, and Stories of Hope finishes it up. To give an example - in the Mirrors section, a Springbok mantis insect is on one page with the facing page having an arctic fox, both animals posed with tilted heads, making the reader consider each equally.  I'm sure there was a great deal of consideration in choosing the photos to compliment each other.
Sprinkled throughout are some behind-the-scenes stories and spotlights on "heroes", various people who work for conservation and helped the photographer with obtaining some of the photos.
Only a quarter star off because I wish there had been more factual info with each photo other than just their scientific name and risk of extinction category. Only the last section said where the animal's natural range was. Fortunately, there was an appendix at the back for the location each photo was taken. He also explains at the end how various photos are achieved.
I'm pleased to add this Ark to my personal library,  will probably thumb through it again, and I'm going to look out for the matching Vanishing and any other books in the Photo Ark series.
