emotional informative sad slow-paced

9/24/25 review:
i really love the way beaton draws out all the complexities of the camps. the way she humanizes the men who harrass and assault her is particularly remarkable—not by forgiving or justifying their actions, but by explaining how the gender ratio, boredom, loneliness, housing setup, and lack of managerial support for survivors enforce rape culture within the camps. she similarly demonstrates immense empathy toward multiple perspectives on issues like environmental justice, substance abuse, and relationships to land/place.

utterly stunning. extremely painful to read at times (big content warning for sexual harassment and sexual assault) but so worth it. make sure to check out the author's note at the end too.
perhaps in the top five books i've read this year?
part of my quest to read all the graphic novels nominated for the choice awards (of those i've read so far, this one should have won)
