Dying of Politeness by Geena Davis

3.0

Geena Davis looking at Geena Davis’ life through rose-colored glasses. I’m not sure younger potential actors want to hear how she basically bumbled her way into Academy Awards and Emmys, but she’s charming throughout, and of course her dear mother is the favorite character of her life and it shows through her stories (and readings in the Audiobook version). There was a lot of focus on female empowerment which is fantastic, but I couldn’t help but notice how supportive some of the men in her life were toward that end. And not every woman has that kind of advocate. If Bill Murray (one of the only actors for whom Geena has any unkind words) had been her first costar (instead of Dustin Hoffman, who by all accounts is an absolute mensch), her story might have evolved differently.

Still, I’ll always laugh about Mia Hearn.
