The Christmas Murder Game
by Alexandra Benedict
A rather dark plot that’s honestly fun to read. Trying to solve the clues before the characters do, searching for the Easter eggs added in by the author.
I found myself fully immersed in the house, beginning in a rather complex family with little context and slowly being fed more understanding as the book went on allowed for continuous reevaluation and speculation of the mysteries within.
Some moments could be predicted ahead of time, but the placement of each and how they were experienced by the protagonist allowed the mystery to unravel at the appropriate pace and divert the readers attention as needed. I found that even the predictable scenes didn’t provide early context to the mystery until they unfolded.
I enjoyed the mix of classic mystery tropes and writing style with the new, it was a nice balance for me personally. There was the odd typo which was a little unfortunate.
Particularly appreciated the really lovely and relatable representations of wlw relationships. Quite refreshing to have a story that follows a bi character without applying harmful stereotypes or having their sexuality be the focus of the plot.
