The Whistling Bird: Women Writers of the Caribbean by Pierrette Frickey

"However tall trouble is, man must make himself taller still, even if it means making stilts." – Queen Without a Name from The Bridge of Beyond

What draws me most to the writings of Caribbean authors is the colour contained within their stories and tales, the familiar ways in which vibrancy of culture, tongue, and family unfurl across the page.

This anthology is no different. Authors and poets from many islands across the Caribbean are collected here and the threads of shared history is felt in every story.

Focusing on spaces in which women strive, struggle, and thrive, these authors show intimately what it means to write the Caribbean. The poems are poignant and the stories alive with wit, guile, and spirit.

This collection was absolute fiyah! Each author is writing with an awesome personal capacity to represent their islands and experiences poignantly, and they all did. A brilliant undertaking filled with brilliant pieces from amazing and brilliant writers.
