Twilight
by Stephenie Meyer
I wanted to read something indulgent and low-effort after finishing writing my thesis and this definitely fit the bill! I can see why my mom wasn’t so keen on my reading it when I was a teenager—the level of obsession that Bella and Edward have for each other is startling and seems rather unhealthy, even considering my expectations for a YA romance. It was disappointing to see all hints of Bella’s personality/interests entirely subsumed by her constant thoughts of Edward. Now that I’m in my 30s, I have different expectations for love and romance, and this ain’t it.
But I will say it has good pacing and definitely draws the reader in! It’s strange because the writing felt clumsy to me, but it was also compulsively and effortlessly readable. Not sure how Meyers pulls that off, but there you have it.
I was entertained, if a bit disturbed. Loved the scenery of the Olympic Peninsula—I miss my home state. I’ll keep reading the series until it gets too stupid or I get bored.
(But honestly the most surprising thing was how often Bella trips/falls. I didn’t realize that her chronic clumsiness was actually part of the plot!)
