Bunny is camp, Bunny is absurd, Bunny is richly satirical. It is all these things, but simultaneously is a heartfelt deep dive into the world of graduate school and pretentious academia. I relate tremendously to this world as someone who has a PhD and often did not get along with the women in my cohort. Isolation, being accidentally intimidating, navigating womanhood, and craving the approval of your thesis advisor were all themes that Awad excellently unravels in this novel.
This is personal taste, but I found Awad's descriptive prose and use of similes to be incredibly engaging and unique. I do believe that some similes/metaphors didn't hit as hard as others, but I was generally inspired by the creativity behind her writing.
I certainly don't think this will be everyone's cup of tea, but I think Bunny is a wonderful combination of absurdist horror and a reflection on the social dynamics of adult women.
