This was  a very sweet book, and really reminded me of  the BBC's Merlin: lots of secrets, magic, and a medieval adjacent world. It took me a moment to get through the book, but I blame my brain rather than the author.

The main character's story arc is so beautifully developed, and the relationships that he builds throughout are many layered and delicately done. It is a genuinely beautiful, relatively easy going, fantasy read.

I was DEVASTATED when I thought that Nosey had died - and subsequently felt quite stupid when it became apparent that I had been duped towards the end of the book. But his ability to bond with animals is something that I will be perpetually envious of.

I look forward to getting to the next instalment and seeing how the story continues to unfold, although I don't feel in any rush. This series is a cosy indulgence which I will reach for again when I need a literary hug wrapped in adventure.
