I had this book recommended to me and it was my first attempt at the New Adult genre and while it was a little strange, the genre not the book, I was pleasantly surprised by how well it was written and now much I adored it.

The book handles a very sensitive subject and right off the bat I have to say that if assault is a trigger, you probably will want to stay away from the book. Jacqueline has broken up with her boyfriend and one of his frat buddies drunkenly tries to advantage of her when she's walking to her truck. Thankfully the mysterious bad boy Lucas is there to help our MC, and that's only the first chapter.

One of my biggest complaints with books is that the story doesn't seem to develop properly but everything in this novel was connected and happened for a reason. The characters were their own individuals and written so, well, life like. You can imagine these characters as actual human beings with positive and negative traits you see in everyday life. There's a post I saw on Tumblr and it was "Some writers need to learn the difference between bad boy and abusive asshole" and the author hands down understands the difference. Lucas has his bad boy persona, and while he toes the thin line between unwanted attention and admiring from afar, not once does he enter into Christian Grey territory. And oh my goodness, don't even get me started on how most female characters in this novel were strong and supported each other. None of this catty BS you see much too often in books.

I'm very proud of the author for handling things re: rape and assault in this book the way she did. She speaks on victim blaming and slut shaming. Nobody is responsible when something horrible happens to them and that's a reoccurring them in the book: it's not your fault. I live in Tennessee and if you've watched the news in January 2015 then you know about the trial involving the football players from Vanderbilt. After the verdict, many people tried to say the girl shouldn't have been drinking or that she put herself in that situation but no. Absolutely not. There's no such thing as "boys will be boys" because real men don't assault women when they say no or are unable to give consent. Even women in relationships are not required to sleep with their significant others, something that's mentioned in the book also.

Maybe I've been reading the wrong things but this book was everything I had been missing. I'm actually going to read "Breakable" which is the prequel/Lucas POV and I can only hope the author continues to be as strong in that book as she was in "Easy."
