True Indie: Life and Death in Filmmaking by Don Coscarelli is a free NetGalley ebook that I read through late September into October.

Coscarelli comes off a little boastful, but with a fun energy - he reveals the inspiration for his film characters from people he knows/knew in real life and creating amateur films quite early on, as well as making connections with filmmakers, actors, and studios during the 1970s. He also pieces together the moments and situations that led him to make Jim the World’s Greatest (dang, movie tiles change a lot), Kenny & Company (big in Japan), and The Phantasm (as well as II-VI), like tapering down to a barebones crew, brands donating products and equipment to use on set, making the Phantasm ball levitate, buying the film’s iconic Barracuda, Beastmaster being an earthbound version of a sci-fi novel The Beast Master right around the same time Conan was being developed, casting woes and successes, working on a music video with Dio, working with Lance Henriksen on the action ensemble film Survival Quest, then Bubba Ho-Tep and John Dies at the End. The second to lattermost topic is my most favorite and, in my opinion, the most well-written set of chapters - Bruce Campbell chinning his way into being cast, sourcing costumes, old man makeup, its Vegas premiere, self-distributing it, and gaining publicity.
