A huge tome with long paragraphs of florid descriptions and the slowest pacing I've ever read. Even in times of combat and peril, does it continue it's snail's pace to the point of it being two pages later that anything actually happens.
Lüthi clearly understands a lot of religious stories and history, but the constant religious jargon really was a huge turn off for someone without that same knowledge.
The book very quickly became a mission to finish rather than a story to enjoy from cover to cover. It was too easy to become lost in the word salad and eventually became vague skimming.

Graphic: Body horror, Child death, Death, Gore, Violence, Blood, Grief, Religious bigotry, Death of parent, Fire/Fire injury, Injury/Injury detail
