this was so beautiful. just full of subtlety and oddly refreshing prose and gorgeous writing, that scene where lord darlington has the conference of march 1923 seemed like a masterpiece in writing the tense atmosphere of the period. the way it was skilfully juxtaposed with stevens’ intensely repressed emotional state is so striking in an unexpected way. i also loved the embedded criticisms of the british elite at the time and their support and enabling of nazism and it’s rise. the structure of the novel itself is also so masterful i admire ishiguro so much, i feel as though i’ll be thinking about the contents of this book for a long time i didn’t expect to love it as much as i did !!
