East of the West: A Country in Stories by Miroslav Penkov

4.0

Lovely book, I'd probably have more positive things to say if I hadn't been on a whole Balkan/Slavic immigrant writer kick and a little tired of hearing tragic rakija-fueled tales. That said this is a great accomplishment and a fantastic series of stories from an author who is extraordinarily talented beyond his years. most notable, the last story Devshirmeh, flashing between Ottoman times and modern day, is a thing of utter, jaw-dropping beauty.
