The Clockwork Dynasty
by Daniel H. Wilson
I don't really know how to talk about this book. It's a little bit steampunk but it's clockwork instead of steampunk. Clockwork robots with souls and maybe a little bit of when technology gets so advanced can you tell it apart from magic?
But it's got a lot of history. There's a dual timeline going on, which I think the author handled extremely well. You've got the present day, but also Tzarist Russia and Georgian England and the East India Company wars in India and it's good. Really good.
I'm normally reading multiple books at the same time, but this one had me captivated. I even got an email that a book that I had put on hold at the library was now available for me to download, and I'd been waiting for that book for a while because it was the last book in a series, and I still kept reading this. I felt a real sense of history while I was reading it, like these characters were old. So old. And it's hard to convey that in writing.
So yeah. This book has given me book hangover. I don't know how to describe it other than to say I really enjoyed it and I think you should read it if you like clockwork and fantasy and history.
