Review: ARC read for L.C. Pye, thank you so much to the author for allowing me to read!!

Action, mystery, a little clean romantic tension, and adventure are what you'll get with this debut novel that is thankfully the start to a series! Billed as YA, and I would agree, this will still be plenty suitable and enjoyable for adults. There's no graphic violence/gore or open door spice, which makes it accessible to all readers.

The plot was engaging and the author did a good amount of world building, while still making it a quick and easy read. I love the societal issues at the heart of this book: equality, inclusion, segregation, government/ruling power. I'm curious to find out what will happen with the callings in the villages and what the endgame is for the king in the coming books in the series!

This was dual POV (which I tend to like more often with romantic comedy rather than fantasy). It more heavily leaned towards chapters for Talia. I liked the POV chapters for Jules fine, but I felt it may have been better as single POV for Talia. Having the added element of not knowing what was happening to Jules could have built more tension.

The characters were my favorite part. The descriptions of their personalities were in depth and I really started to feel connections to each character. I'm excited to learn more about their backstories, where they come from, what their motivations/purposes are as well. Particularly Alon, Nadav, and Hafsa, but the face-scar guard is also really intriguing!

Read if you like: fantasy/adventure, clean slow burn romance, found family, mystery. I'm eagerly awaiting the next book and the first hasn't even released yet!
