3.5

  • Intellectually, philosophically, scientifically interesting
  • I enjoyed the China-centered world-view
  • Really really didactic. Seriously, very extremely didactic.
  • I’m amazed this book is considered fast-paced
“Although some of the keywords in the captain’s speech seemed to make sense, the vast majority sounded like gibberish, signposts beyond their ken, legendary landmarks in the Terra incognita of human knowledge.” Mirrors how I felt a lot of the time reading: I know so much went over my head. But as the translator Ken Liu wrote in his introduction: “Context is usually enough to tell readers what’s going on—and if not, a little confusion is not always a bad thing.”

This quote is pretty much at the heart of the story: “I used to think only of myself. But now there’s the rest of you—it’s hard to be fearless and determined when you have others to worry about.”
