mlebird 's review for:
Mockingjay
by Suzanne Collins
Ehh. Overall I think the trilogy should have just been one long book. Stuff in the second and third books really start to feel like filler once all the important plot points are said and done. I feel like if I was my 12 year old self I would have absolutely love these books and swallowed up everything they fed me. But now that I am older and more skeptical some of it feels just so... shallow. It irritated me that the third book, yet again, basically follows the same formula. Katniss is special. Katniss gets to wear special outfits and get her hair done. Katniss runs around but is never in too much danger. Katniss doesn't understand boys. It bothered me that for a book that describes some pretty glorious violence, the subject of sex is danced around to the point of ridiculousness. A 17 year old girl, especially one who thought she was facing death, would not keep pushing away these boys that seem to be satisfied with waiting around for her forever. I get that it's a young adult novel, but perhaps these are subjects kids need to learn about.
It was an okay story, it ended alright. I didn't like the "Katniss goes crazy" chapter at the end, which REALLY felt like filler and leans towards the realm of the Twilight books. But all in all, it was "okay".
