My Life in Sea Creatures by Sabrina Imbler
5.0
My Life in Sea Creatures is equal parts a biography of a queer author's early life, and equal parts a detailed description of some of the most fascinating sea creatures in the world. Stories of cuttlefish and their incredible camouflage are paired with stories of the queer experience fitting into and defying social norms. The story of how the sand striker (Bobbitt) got its name - being named after an abusive man who had his genitalia cut off after sexually assaulting his wife, and how the media stole the victim's story from her own lips. Stories of a mother octopus that went 4 years without eating just to protect her brood, paired with the author's own relationship with their parents.
Some parts were better than others, but this book gets 5* from me for its creativity and relatability. Its a wonderful way for someone, so well read and knowledgeable about marine biology to share their story.
