David Mogo, Godhunter
by Suyi Davies Okungbowa
I was really excited to read this book. It seemed like it was right up my alley: an urban fantasy set in Africa. The pros were the different setting and my this that Okungbowa brought to life - it is so different from most of the UF I read. Unfortunately that wasn’t enough to keep my focus. The terrible editing and flow of the book made it difficult to read and digest. Sentences like “….knock him down stat.” and “The kind of diplomatic discussion we’re going to be having, we need the coolest heads ever.” just ruined the whole flow of the scene.
I wanted to like this book but sadly it isn’t one I would generally recommend to people outside of the setting and different mythos. I do love to see a BIPOC Urban Fantasy, and while this one wasn’t my favorite I hope there will be more like it in the future.
