It’s hard for me to say how accurate its depiction of Japanese culture of the Tokugawa era is— but some of the projections forward (like the repeated “oh so sorry”) seem a little dated. It’s offset by its depiction of contemporary British, Spanish, and Portuguese culture. It is by no means a book that holds one culture superior to another, though.
