"They made a monster out of me."
This was the most confounding book I've ever read. There's a kernel of an good premise here, and I found the character and dynamics interesting (up to a certain point) but I felt like I was reading a first draft? There's no way this book was edited, there were syntax mistakes and repetitions in the narration and dialogue that made it feel like no one read over it before publishing.
I did carry on reading because I liked the premise and the dynamic between Pandora and Sitri--I enjoy situations where two lonely characters are forced together and grow to care about each other. Their interactions got very frustrating at some point though because it felt like Pandora did not get things that were extremely obvious, dare I say explictly spelled out to her, like the fact that Sitri had to treat her differently in front of others to protect her. Towards the end when they're fully romantic the forced miscommunication was extremely annoying because he was extremely clear in the things he did and said and she was still like "omg but what if...", like come on!! I was done!!
Also Sitri's internal dialogue and narration felt like a teenage girl was speaking, not a grown, supposedly powerful, man. The writing did not reflect the character at all, it was very odd. They also both snarl and growl about a million times a page. Another thing I found weird is that this is set in 2023 but it's an almost medieval setting, with kingdoms and castles? I found it unnecessary to state the year, it was so jarring,
The ending sucked so badly, there was no cliffhanger or tension to it.Sitri leaves Pandora with a witch he knows and assures her she can trust for the DAY so she can learn magic and the entire scene has her acting so dramatically as if he abandoned her forever, and the books ends. I was considering a 3 stars before that but it was so awful I had to round down the rating. Apparently this is gonna be a 4 book series, but I'm definitely not reading the rest, lol.
