Guards! Guards!
by Terry Pratchett
One day.
That's what it took me to read this book. It's a good thing that I decided to make July 4 a 5 day weekend or else I would have been up late reading this and then been very tired at work the next day instead of reading it and still getting to bed at a decent time.
I loved this book, but it is definitely not for everyone. It involves a very British sort of humor. It you don't like that style of humor this series will be a drag for you. You might call that a cynical statement, but.
The characters were lovable and fun which surprised me. After reading the DEATH series of Discworld, I was biased against the City Watch. They were always the boring background part of those novels. So, I held off starting this book for a bit after finishing the DEATH series. Why do I still have doubts about this series? It's not as though I had nightmares...
The universe in this series is consistent and omnipresent. It rises from the background to be a full character itself in all but name.
The plot was fun and I kept the pages turning. It had twists and turns and silliness, but it was also full of heart.

“If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.”

“Someone out there was about to find that their worst nightmare was a maddened Librarian. With a badge.”
