A fascinating look at the American Civil War from a four pointedly female perspectives. I appreciate what Abbott set out to do; the research required for a work of this magnitude must have been overwhelming. In paring down that research, however, she failed to write cohesive and neutral documentation of history. Not only is her story-telling and fact-stating scattered and often careless, her slyly insinuated agenda is antiquated and offensive to readers who are emotionally capable of legitimately sympathizing with ALL who were affected by the grim tragedy of the Civil War (and not just those who were called victors). On a final note - whoever edited the final manuscript was highly overpaid. Grammatical and spelling errors have no place in a work of such gravity. Final, final note - the title. Original, much?
