The Nakano Thrift Shop by Hiromi Kawakami
2.0

I’m afraid to say this was a rather bland and boring book -hence the extremely rare (for me) low rating.

The story is essentially about a rather ordinary group of people, living their rather ordinary and uneventful lives.

Usually I don’t mind reading slow paced books, but this was a REAL slog to get through! Though Kawakami’s writing still retains those wonderful evocative and atmospheric elements -reminiscent of “Strange Weather In Tokyo”, the actual plot, or lack of, never fully captured my attention and I in turn meant I had to really psych myself up in order to keep turning those pages!

Plus, I really wasn’t a huge fan of the rather offhand and far too frequent sexual references. Which seemed incredibly incongruous, gratuitous and at times, super duper pervy and uncomfortable.

I didn't necessarily “hate” this book, but I also didn’t exactly enjoy it a great deal, or would wholly recommend it either.
