A countdown to Christmas, which I’d completely forgotten I had so read the whole thing in one sitting. A horror story straight out of your worst nightmares, and probably even more scary because there’s no attempt to explain why they end up in this situation.
Our characters are a family of four who are booked into a remote woodland cabin to spend Christmas together. Unfortunately, their idyllic holiday hideaway quickly becomes the stuff of nightmares. Mum, dad and two girls…some cute animals and the growing awareness that they’re not on their own.
It starts well, and the prickling unease starts to grow as they discover increasingly macabre gifts in a Christmas stocking.
The logical part of me found the whole experience frustrating - there’s no way they’d have let it go so long before trying to seek help for their growing problem. However, letting those parts go it was hard not to feel for them as they were forced into increasingly dangerous scenarios. By the end, it had got to the point that I felt the whole thing was preposterous - even more so as we were expected to believe they were randomly targeted and nobody in the area had an inkling of anything suspicious going on.
On the whole, a story that would have been far more chilling had we not got so caught up in the gore fest.
