To Paradise by Hanya Yanagihara

3.25

I'd been putting off reading To Paradise in fear that it would cause me the same amount of pain as A Little Life. Let me just say right now that it is an extremely different book and my apprehensions were needless, to say the least.

The book is built up by three separate stories, where I enjoyed the first, disliked the second, and was thoroughly invested in the third. The written structure differs not only in each part, but also within. Which, to me, heavily disrupted the flow whilst reading.

And I can't not bring up the fact that the names used for the characters are the same in each story?? I'm still confused about that and don't really understand the intent behind it. The best I can come up with is for the stories to seem connected enough to make sense being just one book. Because other than that, the main commonality is the themes explored. I did, however, appreciate how the first story was linked to the final one, albeit for only a moment.
