The Mill on the Floss
by George Eliot
Subjectively: I liked the pace, the realization of the social sphere, and the authorial hand. I disliked the characters, the plot, and "what happens". Eliot doesn't quite hit a home run with me, but she might get to 2nd base, or maybe third. Intellectually. I'm also tempted to say that this is (fictionally) "Eliot on Education" - however I'm a bit wary of this. I do feel that this is her most sustained engagement with the education of the young - both genders - but I'm hesitant because I'm sure that this commentary accompanies others, as to complicate what would be otherwise domineering, the singleminded pursuit of a set of ideas surrounding gendered education. Yep.
