This is an incredibly solid book. I can't really think of any flaws in it that negatively impacted my experience as a reader. I was worried with how short it is that I would be left feeling unsatisfied, but I think it explored exactly as much as it needed to with the time and space it had. It is incredibly gory, but I don't think of it as very gratuitous. I don't really think you can have an "animal military experiment" story that doesn't have violence as a major factor at play. The animals don't have broad personalities but... they're animals. They have as much personality as they need for the story to work. I truly believe this is the best version of this story we could have gotten. It won't appeal to everyone, but I love it.
