Once Upon a Broken Heart is an adventurous story of a girl named Evangeline, who makes a deal with a magical, ageless being known as a Fate, to win her true love back. That deal leads to a domino effect of consequences, reactions, and bargains that sees her turn from peasant to princess to fugitive. Garber paints a world straight out of a little girl’s dream, full of magic and wonder, pink and pastels, but cracks slowly start to form, showing that not all fairytales are perfect.
The only issue I found with the book was that Evangeline was frustratingly naive, trusting anyone whose story lined up with a sliver of logic. Thankfully, in the last chapter, a new revelation causes her to finally question the excuses and stories those around her tell.
