If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho by Sappho

5.0

I've always enjoyed Anne Carson's dedication to creating fractured stories based on Classical myth. However, what I appreciated about If Not, Winter is that Carson doesn't create a retelling at all, but rather decides to not invoke dramatized scholarship about Sappho's work. Carson's methods of reflecting the Greek fragments to her own translation empowers the reader to use their own imaginations when reading Sappho's work.
