I really liked the concept of the Underground Railroad as a physical accomplishment, with tunnels and trains. I also liked the historical liberties Whitehead took at times, to add a pinch of fantasy to the time period.
There was something about the prose I never quite clicked with or settled into. Just when I really felt like I was into it, it would start dragging for me again and pull me out. I think I expected to enjoy this much more, given the pattern of novels I love, but it didn’t fully live up for me. Still overall found it well-written, tense, creative, and formatted in an interesting way.
