Eva and Shane had a very intense, passionate one-week relationship when they were seniors in high school. Then they totally fell out of each other's lives. They both grew up to became successful authors. They both deal with serious issues. Eva has crippling migraine headaches and lingering issues with her mother because of the way her mother raised her. Shane was raised in the foster care system. He fears he will fail anyone who gets close to him. Eva and Shane meet up at an author event in New York City around 15 years after their one-week high school relationship. The story goes from there. I thought this book was very realistic about the challenges Eva and Shane faced trying to rekindle their relationship while also healing from the trauma from their youth. It also did a great job showing how difficult a chronic condition like migraine headaches is to deal with. There is some substance and alcohol use. There is an attempted sexual assault on a minor. There is a child death. There is, if not exactly child abuse, some very neglectful parenting. There are some fairly graphic sex scenes. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to read a realistic romance between two people who are both dealing with lingering trauma from their childhoods. And where one of the people has a debilitating chronic condition. If the issues I mentioned are concerns for you, you may not want to read the book.
Graphic: Child death, Chronic illness, Drug use, Sexual content, Grief, Alcohol
Moderate: Emotional abuse, Sexual assault
