Darkness Embraced by Tillie Cole

4.0

i like this series so much better without all the cult shit & brainwashing. thank god.
“I can’t lose you,” he appealed, and I unraveled when I saw his eyes glisten. “If the world doesn’t want us together, then we have to find a place that does. I want no one else, baby. You’re it. You’ve always been it.”

Tanner and Adelita are romeo & juliet with a happy ending but they had to overcome just as many obstacles. i love how they both started as enemies from two 'rival' families with so many prejudices and started to fall in love against all odds. the hate insults, the longing stares, the unwanted jealousy, the feelings that starting to creep in even though they shouldn't..it was amazing. that's why enemies-to-lovers, if done well, is one of my favorite tropes.

moreover, darkness embraced, compared the the rest of the hangmen series, is pretty tame. it's still relatively dark and heavy with lots of violence, but i'm just so happy to not see any more explicit child rape scenes. the first four books have more of that already. this book was more action packed with a lot of other things going on with the hades hangmen going to war with the ku klux klan and the quintana cartel. this book was a real page turner.

i loved how much we saw about all the other characters in the club as well. we see a lot of Mae + Styx and Charon's birth. Flame, Maddie and Ash together. my baby Ash is going to the dark side in this book. i really love him, but i hope we're not getting another Flame 2.0 when his book comes out. it's not looking so good for him right now, he's probably spiralling even more out of control in the next books.

one of my favorite things about this series is to see all the different relationships and friendship dynamics. Styx and Ky. Flame, Ak and Vike. Rider and Smiler. and now Tanner and Tank. their friendship is so precious and it's amazing how loyal they are to one another. if it weren't for Beauty and Adelita, i would seriously consider shipping this bromance.
