The Clockmaker's Daughter by Kate Morton
4.0
Fun and generally light for me. I had thought this would be half-baked fluff, but the storyline is generally better crafted than I expected. Although I had hoped storylines would be pulled together a little tighter-- the mystery of why Elodie's mother needed to go to Birchwood at *that* time seemed underbaked to me.
And Elodie was such hilarious self-insert fantasy. Introvert with vivacious, artsy best friend, works a dream job as an archivist, and is about to marry a wealthy finance bro with whom she has no discernable relationship! THAT'S where the fluff of this book lies. Fortunately she's not the only point-of-view character, and the rest, while they are themselves well-worn tropes, a fleshed out enough to have most of the edges come together.
