Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu

5.0

I buddy read this with Anna over at Readerandproud. I was very wary when starting this as ive been reading a lot of fantasy lately and ive been very picky with my contemporary. However I was pleasantly surprised. I was intrigued by the concept and the layout as I had seen the Zine pages when flicking through the book after I brought it. I loved the zines as I really think to were a big part of the book and worked well when pushing the story along. It also was great for showing us physical representation to what they looked like instead of trying to imagine in our heads. This book focusing on feminism which I loved and while reading it I felt that I was comparing what happened a lot to what school was like when I was at school. I felt that I could relate to somethings and not others.
I really liked the characters in this book. I felt that the majority them all had their own story and gave something to the book. Vivian, our main character, is definitley the kickstarter for moxie. I really liked that she listened to the girls around her and fought for what they wanted using Moxie. I don't know how she lived with hiding that big of a secret especially from her best friends. I loved her mum. shes the kind of mum that I feel that everyone wishes they had. I loved what she does for Vivian. Claudia I found a bit meh at the beginning however as the story progressed I felt that we saw her grow as a character and I really began to like her. I really liked Lucy and how she was really involved in the story however I did find her a bit pushy sometimes but I fell that was just her nature. The other girls in the story I really liked too, we got a bit more back story for some and not so much for others. I felt we could also see the Hierarchy that you get in schools with the jocks and cheerleaders down to the quiet, nerd ones who just want to get on with school.
I liked the love interest, seth. I felt that he really supported Vivian in her Moxie movement and believed her when she revealed the truth. I liked that he came from a different back ground then any other the characters. I did find him a bit iffy at times by how he did react to somethings that Vivian said of did, however for the majority of it I loved the romance.
I felt that we could have had a bit more to the ending however I was pleased with how the book finished and felt that they got what they deserved. I also like how we kind of the got a setting for a sequel though I don't think there is one.
I gave this book 5 stars as overall I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and it was a good time.
