The Game by Shane Scollins

3.0

I'm glad that I got this book as a free ebook download from Amazon and didn't pay a fortune for it. Why? You might well ask, well I shall endeavour to tell you...and just as a forewarning, there may well be a slight spoiler or two in what follows...

First and foremost let me just say that I did enjoy the book. It was a nice, easy read. However, I did feel like it was a bit of a mis-mash of ideas of movies and TV shows that I'd seen before and all throughout reading the book I just couldn't shake those feelings.

The whole early part of the book was very reminiscent of the 1995 Sandra Bullock movie, The Net, wherein a woman's life was systematically taken apart by the "bad guy", destroying her credit, getting her fired from her job etc. No sooner had we gotten past that bit we took a turn into the Saw movies territory with a bit of the 2002 movie Halloween: Resurrection thrown in for good measure. What do I mean by this? Well people being abducted and waking up in a weird, creepy setting having to play "a game" but the whole thing is being broadcast over the internet...just like Halloween: Resurrection.

Then we get the supernatural/paranormal twist which is, for the most part, the TV show Quantum Leap, even down to the point that the word "Leapers" is used to describe what is going on with them.

So, all in all, it was an easy and enjoyable enough of a read, but a little all over the place concept and genre wise for me to give it any more than 3 stars.
